Vikram Amar is a Distinguished Professor of Law at UC Davis School of Law and a Professor of Law and Former Dean at the University of Illinois College of Law on the Urbana-Champaign campus. Before beginning his previous role as Dean at Illinois Law in 2015, he was a professor and administrator at various law schools within the University of California system, including the UC Davis School of Law, the UCLA School of Law, UC Berkeley School of Law, and UC Hastings College of Law.
He has penned several books and over 75 articles in leading academic journals, focusing on constitutional law, federal courts, and civil procedure. He earned his AB from UC Berkeley and his JD from Yale Law School.
Prior to entering academia, Professor Amar clerked for Justice Harry A. Blackmun of the U.S. Supreme Court before joining the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He was the first person of South Asian heritage to clerk at the Supreme Court and was the first American-born person of Indian descent to become the dean of a major American law school.
